Ryan Adams Meets Burger King
I was just in Burger King for lunch and they were playing Ryan Adams’ NEW YORK NEW YORK, which struck me as kind of weird at first. I guess it’s because I think of him as slightly outside of the mainstream, and definitely not elevator music. But the thing is, even though people don’t think of him that way, his music is very conventional and mainstream. He really fit perfectly into BK’s jams of The Police and John Mellencamp. I know it’s kind of late in the game to weigh in on Adams (or I might have even done so already), but his music is classic rock. He’s Bob Seger. I saw Adams on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE and I thought he was great. Then I heard his album and I thought I was listening to BORN IN THE USA. It was all loud organs and raspy vocals. Nothing wrong with that, but nothing for everyone to drool over either.
So kudos to Burger King for their top-notch music programming. They’ve got great ears over there.
