Bush’s State of the Blah, Blah, Blah…
Yeah, I don’t really know what he’s saying… I’m upstairs and Otto is downstairs watching the whole thing and I’m sure shaking his head in disgust. All I hear is “blah, blah blah, blah” and clapping. I tried to look up what he was talking about but you know what? I got bored. I’m not going to try to portray myself as someone who closely follows politics, I don’t. In fact, I’m quite self absorbed and happy in my own little bubble. I know that there’s a lot of shit out there that I should be concerned about that may affect me one day but I’m one person with a countless other things to be worried about. In fact, what I find even more disturbing are people who bitch and moan about the state of things and do absolutely nothing. They sit there tsking and shaking their fists and then walk away back to their jobs, their families and homes. Hey, if you’re angry about something, go do something about it, otherwise leave me alone and let me do what I know I’m passionate about.
“Blah, blah, blah, blah…” Clap, clap, clap, clap….
What I do know is that the state of our education system is horrible and since Bush signed the No Child Left Behind Act, well, we’re still leaving about the same amount of children behind. Reading and Math scores are not any higher than it has been and the push to have higher quality teachers in the classroom has resulted in accelerated programs that give away degrees to unqualified people. And these unqualified teachers go on to failing schools lasting for about 2 years (enough to fullfill their contractual agreement) or go on to special education programs in private school settings to make a shit load of money at the stake of a child’s quality of life.
“Blah, blah, blah…” Clap, clap, clap…
What I do know is that our nation requires standardized testing for all our students including our severely disabled. And every year we provide alternate assessments on our kids and make them record their own body temperature and send cards to each other DESPITE the fact that most of our students can’t read, can’t write, can’t talk, can’t look at you, can’t shit in a toilet and enjoy using my hand as a chew toy for the sake of mandatory standards.
What I do know is that there is a lot of things that need a fixin’ round here and there isn’t anything being done about it.
So I’ll just keep moseying on along - trying to make a difference in my students’ lives to the best of my ability despite how bad things look around here.
Did I just contradict myself? Probably…but who the hell cares?
